Seven New Year Resolutions to Empower Engineering Students to Achieve Success in 2016

We all know New Year is a perfect time to reflect on the changes we want to or need to make in our life. There are ample research articles to suggest that the unfortunately, more than half of all New Year’s resolutions won’t make it past six months, “why they just don’t stick?” I’ll tell you why. Here is the main principles that business leaders follow and you too can adopt. If you want to make your resolution last longer, make sure to follow this in your life.

Don’t make a resolution for the whole year: Give yourself a reachable goal that later, surprisingly, became a life-long habit. And research backs this up – scientists have found that it takes somewhere between 21 and 66 days for a habit to take root in a person’s life. And after this if you don’t last the course, don’t think you’ve wasted your time – most successful people agree that you learn more from your failures than your wins. I'm don’t want to be the bearer of bad news, but if your New Year’s resolution is “Study hard and will study 10-12 hrs. every day in 2016,” you’re setting yourself up for failure. But if you take a resolution of studying e.g. five days a week for five weeks,” I’ll bet you’ll able to keep that resolution last long. True life change takes root when goals are short-term, simple and achievable.

Now coming back to the resolution part, nothing can spoil the start of a new year quite like a long list of promises you already know you are going to break. Some resolutions get betrayed right away; others remind you of your ongoing failure to do something for months. Here are 7 resolutions I selected to be your guide while you choosing your own one. This list is inspired by the hundreds of engineering students with whom I’ve worked.

This Year I will do at least One Internship

If you want to leave your college with a job, you need to secure internships and gain work experience while you are still in college. An internship is the perfect opportunity to discover what working in a particular role is like while gaining experience that is highly sought after by employers.

This Year I will Network, Network, Network!

Become friends with your classmates, play nice with your coworkers and get to know your teachers. This New Year is the perfect opportunity to create connections and to network with everyone you know. Create rewarding routines and connect with a wide array of new people. Be sure to keep your online presence professional —you never know what future employers will be looking for.

This year I will Harness my Soft Skill

While the job market for engineering grads has improved in 2015, many employers still report trouble finding qualified candidates. What’s the problem here? A lack of demonstrated soft skills. Please keep in mind technical acumen alone is insufficient for engineering career success. Soft skills play an increasingly important role in the workplace and in professional and personal development.

This year I will work for my Digital Profile

Brand your future self, today. You may think I’m from “the real world” and my future career are far off… but believe me they are closer than you think. What you do online today will echo in eternity. So start building your future brand today and get hired more quickly tomorrow.

This year I am going to live a Healthy Living

A healthy mind, healthy body connection is the key to a much happier life. You don’t have to run a marathon; you simply need to get moving. And since social connections are another essential component to happiness and success, this resolution is like a two for one. You’ll be happier, healthier, and more successful.

This year I will try to get a Global Perspective

Gain a global perspective, develop capacity and predisposition to think with complexity taking into account multiple perspectives. If you have an opportunity to travel outside of your home country, take it. If you don’t, then be a tourist in your own backyard. Exploring new places keeps your mind open to new possibilities, enhances your creativity, and helps you gain valuable perspective. Employers seek perspective in candidates.

This year I will Give Back to the Community

Give back by volunteering your time and your skills. You'll be amazed by the people you meet and the experiences you'll have when you're giving back to your community in this way. Research repeatedly tells us that giving back is good for our mental well-being, our happiness, our physical wellness and that it provides purpose in our lives. Find opportunities to give back in 2016, even if it’s just telling at least one person a day that they are important and appreciated.

So if your 2016 didn’t turn out the way you hoped, take a look back in the above list and see if anything here might help. Make 2016 Your Epic Year! - All the Best!
