What you will build

Worked-solution portfolio for an end-semester paper

Pick a previous Year-1 maths paper from your college (or the PYQs listed in exam prep). Solve at least 8 questions across the four topics (limits/series, optimisation, integration, matrices). For each: write the full working, name the technique used, and note one common mistake you avoided. Submit as a PDF or notebook scans.

You will submit: A PDF or scans with at least 8 fully worked solutions, each labelled with the technique (L Hospital, by-parts, eigenvalue, etc.).

Limits, continuity and L Hospital rule

Read a limit from three sides, spot discontinuities, and resolve 0/0 forms.

What you will learn
  • Evaluate left-hand and right-hand limits and decide when a two-sided limit exists
  • Classify removable, jump and infinite discontinuities from a formula
  • Apply L Hospital rule only after verifying the form is 0/0 or infinity/infinity
  • Combine limit laws (sum, product, squeeze) without guessing

An examiner writes lim(x->0) sin(x)/x on the board and asks for the answer without a calculator. The ones who understand that the ratio of two quantities going to zero at the same rate approaches the ratio of their instantaneous speeds write 1 in five seconds. That speed difference is what this lesson builds.

A limit answers one question: what value does f(x) approach as x approaches a, even if f(a) itself is undefined.

Two-sided limit exists iff:

  1. Left-hand limit lim(x->a-) f(x) exists.
  2. Right-hand limit lim(x->a+) f(x) exists.
  3. They are equal.

Continuity at a: the limit exists AND equals f(a).

Discontinuity typeBehaviourExample
RemovableLimit exists, f(a) differs or undefined(x^2-1)/(x-1) at x=1
JumpLeft and right limits finite but unequalSign function at 0
InfiniteOne or both sides shoot to infinity1/x at x=0

L Hospital rule: for form 0/0 or infinity/infinity, lim f/g = lim f'/g', provided the new limit exists. It does NOT apply to 0 x infinity or infinity - infinity without rewriting first.

Verify the form before differentiating

Substitute the value mentally first. If the result is not 0/0 or infinity/infinity, L Hospital is the wrong tool and an examiner will award zero.

The five indeterminate forms
FormHow to handle
0/0L Hospital directly
infinity/infinityL Hospital directly
0 x infinityRewrite one factor as 1 over something, then get 0/0
infinity - infinityCombine into a single fraction, then get 0/0
1^infinity, 0^0, infinity^0Take log, resolve the log limit, then exponentiate
Resolve a mixed indeterminate form
Evaluate lim(x->0) (1 - cos x) / x^2. Show every step.
  1. 1

    Check the form

    Substitute x = 0: numerator 1 - 1 = 0, denominator 0. Form is 0/0, so L Hospital is legal.

    (1 - cos 0) / 0^2 = 0 / 0
  2. 2

    Apply L Hospital once

    Differentiate: sin x over 2x. Substitute again: still 0/0.

    sin x / 2x   ->   0/0 again
  3. 3

    Apply L Hospital a second time

    Differentiate again: cos x over 2. Substitute: cos 0 / 2 = 1/2.

    cos x / 2   ->   1/2

Solution

The limit is 1/2. One application of L Hospital is not always enough. Re-check the form after differentiating; if still indeterminate, apply again.

Evaluate these yourself

1. lim(x->0) sin(3x) / x 2. lim(x->0) (e^x - 1) / x 3. lim(x->2) (x^2 - 4) / (x - 2) 4. lim(x->infinity) (3x^2 + x) / (x^2 - 5)

Hint: 1 and 2 are 0/0: L Hospital once each. 3 factors. 4: compare highest powers, answer 3.

Common mistakes
  • Applying L Hospital to a non-indeterminate form

    lim(x->1) x^2 = 1 by direct substitution. Differentiating gives 2x = 2, wrong. Always substitute first.

  • Forgetting to re-check the form after differentiating

    After each L Hospital application, substitute again. If no longer 0/0 or infinity/infinity, stop.

  • Confusing continuity with differentiability

    Differentiable implies continuous; |x| is continuous at 0 yet not differentiable there.

Exam / interview angle

Show lim(x->0) (tan x - x) / x^3 = 1/3.

Form 0/0. Differentiate: (sec^2 x - 1) / 3x^2 = tan^2 x / 3x^2. Still 0/0: differentiate again or use tan x ~ x near 0 to get x^2/(3x^2) = 1/3.

Lesson summary
  • Two-sided limit exists iff left limit = right limit, both finite.
  • Continuity = limit exists AND equals f(a).
  • L Hospital: only 0/0 or infinity/infinity; re-check form after each application.
  • Differentiability implies continuity; the converse is false (|x| at 0).

Semester exam prep

Year-1 end-semester exams and GATE/PSU quantitative revision

Units, important questions and previous-year papers — revisit before every exam.

1

Limits, Continuity & Series

Two-sided limit exists iff left = right. L Hospital only for 0/0 or infinity/infinity; re-check form after each application. Memorise e^x, sin x, cos x, 1/(1-x) Maclaurin series; substitute for composites; check interval of validity.

3 important questions
  1. State the conditions for a two-sided limit to exist.
  2. When does L Hospital rule apply, and when does it fail?
  3. Write the Maclaurin series of e^x and sin x from memory.
2

Applications of Derivatives

Critical points: f prime = 0 or undefined. Classify with first derivative test (sign change) or second derivative test. MVT needs continuity on [a,b] and differentiability on (a,b). Curve tracing: five-step checklist; oblique asymptote via division.

3 important questions
  1. How do you classify a critical point?
  2. State the Mean Value Theorem with its hypotheses.
  3. How do you find an oblique asymptote?
3

Integration & Applications

Technique table: substitution, by-parts (LIATE), partial fractions, trig sub. Circular by-parts: two applications then solve for the original integral. Area = integral (upper - lower). Volumes: disk/washer/shell. Improper integrals as limits; p-test on [1,inf).

3 important questions
  1. How do you choose between substitution and by-parts?
  2. When does integral_1^inf 1/x^p converge?
  3. Disk versus shell method: how do you decide?
4

Matrices & Eigenvalues

Rank = non-zero rows in echelon form. det properties: det(AB)=det(A)det(B); triangular det = product of diagonal. Invertible iff det != 0 iff rank = n. Eigenvalues: det(A - lambda I) = 0; sum = trace, product = det. Ax=b solvability: compare rank(A) with rank([A|b]).

3 important questions
  1. How do you compute matrix rank?
  2. What does det(A) = 0 tell you about Ax = b?
  3. State the trace and determinant shortcuts for 2x2 eigenvalues.

What you will be able to do

  • Evaluate limits and apply L Hospital rule only when the form justifies it
  • Expand any smooth function with Maclaurin and Taylor series
  • Optimise engineering problems with first and second derivative tests
  • Sketch curves completely using the five-step checklist
  • Integrate by substitution, by parts, and by partial fractions
  • Compute area, volume and improper integrals as applications
  • Find matrix rank, determinants, inverses and eigenvalues
  • Classify linear systems as unique, infinite or inconsistent from rank

About this course

This course is built around one observation: Year-1 maths is re-taught badly in most colleges, then re-learned under panic before every exam. The underlying ideas are few, and each one has a clear geometric or algebraic picture. Once that picture is solid, the exam questions become routine applications rather than puzzles.

Calculus (Modules 1 and 3) is taught with the standard limit laws, the four memorised series, and a technique-selection table for integration that tells you which tool matches which integrand shape. Applications (Module 2) emphasise the setup of optimisation problems and the five-step curve-tracing checklist rather than blind differentiation. Linear algebra (Module 4) is taught through rank and eigenvalues, the two ideas that carry into every later semester from circuits to control theory to data science.

Every lesson ends with a quiz graded on the server, and the course finishes with a 15-question timed exam drawn from a 30-question bank. Passing earns a verifiable TieEdu certificate.

Who this course is for

  • First-year engineering students of any branch (AKTU / VTU / MU and similar)
  • Diploma students revisiting Year-1 maths
  • GATE / PSU aspirants brushing up fundamentals
  • Anyone preparing for campus placements that test quantitative maths

What you should know before you start

Anything here is assumed, not taught. If it is not on the list, the course explains it.

  • Class-12 calculus (derivatives, basic integrals)
  • Class-12 algebra (quadratics, simultaneous equations)

Questions before you start

How much time does Engineering Mathematics I take?

The course is 4 modules and 8 lessons — about 2 hr 5 min of material in total. Lessons unlock in order, so the time it takes you depends on how much of each lesson you actually read.

Do I get a certificate?

Yes. Finish every lesson and a certificate is issued automatically. Its serial is public: anyone can check it at https://tieedu.com/verify without an account, and a revoked certificate stops verifying.

Is it really free?

Yes — this course is free, and there is nothing to buy to start it.

How is my progress tracked?

On the server, lesson by lesson. Time is credited at real-time speed and capped, so a lesson cannot be marked complete faster than it can be read. That is why the percentage survives a new device.

How do ratings work?

Only learners who finished the course can rate it, and the average shown is calculated from those ratings alone. A course nobody has finished yet carries no rating rather than a default one.
